About Heathrow Airport

Heathrow is the busiest airport in the UK and London's principal long-haul gateway, with four terminals numbered 2 to 5. You will find it roughly 15 miles to the west of central London, near both the M25 and the M4.

Heathrow's own guidance is to set aside an hour or more for the road journey into the centre, with extra time during the morning and evening peaks. A chauffeur-driven car is a calm way to arrive if you are travelling with family or a partner, carrying several cases, landing late, or heading to Surrey, Berkshire and the Home Counties, where there is no direct train.

Typical journeys from Heathrow take guests into central and west London, out to Berkshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire and Oxford, or across to London's other airports.

Getting from LHR to London

Your chauffeur will normally head east on the M4, then follow the A4 through west London. Allow at least an hour for central London, as Heathrow recommends; when the M4 or M25 is congested, or at peak hours, the journey can be considerably longer. What you gain is a single, uninterrupted ride from the arrivals hall to your front door, without changing trains or lifting cases through a station.

Rail is the alternative. Heathrow Express reaches Paddington non-stop; from Terminals 2 and 3 the trip is roughly 15 minutes, a little more from Terminal 5,, with a departure every 15 minutes, and Terminal 4 travellers can connect to it free of charge on the Elizabeth line. That line also crosses central London, getting to the City and Canary Wharf in less than 45 minutes. The Piccadilly line stops at every terminal and takes under an hour to central London, and there are bus and coach links to London and to towns around the country.

For a light traveller staying beside a station, the train is fast. For couples with plenty of luggage, families with young children, groups splitting one fare, late-evening landings and journeys beyond London, a private car is usually the easier choice.

Arrival tips

  1. Heathrow's terminals are spread out, so confirm yours before departure; the meeting point in your confirmation is specific to the terminal where you land.
  2. Look for your chauffeur inside the arrivals hall, holding a board with your name. There is no need to go out to the forecourt.
  3. Clearing immigration and collecting bags at Heathrow may take a few minutes or more than an hour, depending on the hour and the passport you hold. We follow your flight, and the 60 minutes of free waiting begins at the actual landing time.
  4. Turn your phone on after landing. The confirmation lists your chauffeur's name and number, so a quick call or message is all it takes if you need longer at baggage reclaim.
  5. The fare already covers airport parking charges, so nothing further is payable when you are collected.

LHR transfer questions

Which terminal does my airline use at Heathrow?

Terminal 5 is home to British Airways and Iberia, although some BA routes run from Terminal 3, alongside Virgin Atlantic, Delta, American and Emirates. Star Alliance airlines are mostly in Terminal 2, while Qatar Airways, Air France and KLM fly from Terminal 4. Your booking will show the terminal.

How much time should I allow for the drive into London?

Plan on an hour or more to reach central London, which is Heathrow's own advice. Rush hours and heavy traffic on the M4 can add a good deal to that.

How will I recognise my chauffeur at Heathrow?

They will be holding a name board in your terminal's arrivals hall. The confirmation sets out the meeting point for that terminal and gives the chauffeur's name and phone number.

My flight is running late. Will the car still be there?

Yes. Because we track the flight, the pickup is moved to match when you really arrive, and you have 60 minutes of free waiting from touchdown. That is normally enough for passport control and luggage.

Does the fare change with more passengers or child seats?

No. You pay a fixed price for the vehicle, agreed at the time of booking, rather than a charge per person. Airport parking is included, and we supply child seats free if you ask.
